Geoffrey Bakewell, ASCSA Whitehead Visiting Professor, will present the lecture "The Road to Piraeus: Athenian Realien and Plato's Republic."
Situating the most famous philosophical work of antiquity amid the topography of late 5th and early 4th century Athens, Bakewell's talk analyzes possible walking routes for Sokrates and Glaukon ultimately arguing that Plato's readers likely understood the men as departing the Dipylon Gate and following the northern Long Wall until they reached their destination.
