It is generally accepted that during the Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000-1650 BC), a supra-household socioeconomic system was recorded at Erimi in the Kouris Valley. This system, characterized by the presence of labor specialization, heralds the emergence of a complex ranked society. The co-existence of diverse functional spaces, including a productive workshop complex, a shrine, a residential quarter, surrounded by a circuit wall and segregated from an extra-mural funerary area, makes Erimi a key case-study to analyze the formative period of urbanization in Cyprus. The great ideological significance that this community ascribed to textile production is reflected in the consistent efforts to secure the workshop complex and construct communal spaces, identities and roles. At Erimi, therefore, labor and trade on an ever-growing scale, become not only the impulse to the economic growth in a mutual enterprise, but the binding force that held together the members of the community and an arena of social competition. Luca Bombardieri is Associate Professor in Aegean and Cypriote Archaeology at the University of Siena, after being appointed as Lecturer and Associate Professor in Aegean Prehistory and Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Florence and Torino, in Italy. He obtained his MA and PhD in Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Florence, under the supervision of Paolo Emilio Pecorella. He participated in numerous research projects and field activities in Syria, where he supervised the excavation of the Neo-Assyrian Palace at Tell Barri/Kahat; in Iraq and in Italy. In 2007-2008 he conducted the Kouris Valley Survey Project in Cyprus and since 2009 he is successfully leading the scientific direction of the Erimi Archaeological Project, focusing on the fieldwork and research activities at Middle Bronze Age Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and numerous international research partners. He is co-editor of the book series Studi Ciprioti and member of the scientific board of the Cahiers du Centre d' Études Chypriotes. His research covers a broad range of interests, including aspects of social organization and ideology of Bronze Age communities in Cyprus, the prehistory of Mediterranean islands and modern reception of Mediterranean prehistoric art and ideology.
