Imported goods increased dramatically, earlier settlements were abandoned and new ones were established on the coast, alongside a return to intramural burial practices. Particularly striking is an explosion of new pottery styles, and manufacturing technologies, along with the demise of the Red Polished ware, the dominant pottery tradition of the preceding millennium. Whilst stylistic regionalism was typical of production of Red Polished ware in different areas of the island, this cannot account for the sudden increase in new styles, some manufactured in local variants throughout Cyprus, some apparently only popular in certain areas. This paper will explore the differences and similarities within Middle-Late Cypriot transitional ceramic assemblages. Why did pottery styles diversify so dramatically during this time and why did some wares become established whilst others were only short lived? Ongoing excavations at Kissonerga-Skalia are revealing for the first time a substantial assemblage for this period from the west of the island and add to our understanding of crafting traditions in flux during a time of significant social change. Dr Lindy Crewe's research focuses on the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age periods of Cyprus. She undertook her PhD at the University of Edinburgh, investigating the introduction of wheelmade pottery on Late Bronze Age Cyprus utilising the material from Porphyrios Dikaios' excavations at Enkomi. She held the post of Cyprus Curator at the British Museum before moving to the University of Manchester where she was a Lecturer in Archaeology. Since 2017 she has been Director of the Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI) in Nicosia. She is the author of two monographs, co-editor of two volumes and has authored over thirty articles. She was the Field Director of excavations at the Chalcolithic cemetery of Souskiou-Laona from 2001-2006 and since 2007 has directed excavations at the Early-Middle Bronze Age settlement of Kissonerga-Skalia near Paphos.
